Antibiotic card

To improve empirical treatment of common infectious diseases, the Pharmacy and Infectious Diseases Departments at Austin Health have developed a handy antibiotic card that fits neatly behind our name badge. The card is popular among medical staff especially doctors working in the Emergency Department.

Empirical antibiotic regimens including adult dose recommendations, are provided for the following common infectious diseases:

  • Respiratory: community-acquired pneumonia, infective exacerbations of COAD
  • Skin & soft tissue: cellulitis
  • GI tract: cholangitis, cholecystitis, peritonitis secondary to perforation
  • GU tract: UTI and mild pyelonephritis, severe UTI/pyelonephritis
  • CNS: bacterial meningitis, HSV encephalitis

The card also provides starting doses for aminoglycosides – gentamicin and tobramycin.

The card can be modified to suit organizations other than Austin Health. For more information on availability email idea3s.admin@austin.org.au.
