Infectious Diseases Electronic Antibiotic Advice & Approval System
(IDEA3S)
Emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) have been closely linked to the inappropriate use of antibiotics. Antibiotic restriction programs that limit the use of certain antibiotics to particular units, indications or following special approval, have been instituted at many centres including Austin Health to decrease the quantity of these antibiotics used.
Members of the Austin Health’s Infectious Diseases and Pharmacy
Departments have developed an Infectious Diseases Electronic Antibiotic Advice & Approval System (IDEA3S) which can now be obtained free of charge by interested users and
organisations.
IDEA3S has the following features
- Provides on-line advice and approval for high-cost or
resistance-inducing antibiotics and information on treating
common pathogens
- Medical aid calculators e.g. pneumonia severity index (PSI) calculator and a creatinine clearance calculator
- User friendly interfaces
- Stand alone or multi-user application
- Internet connection not required for operation
- Incorporates PDF and HTM files to allow for information retrieval such as pivotal publications/papers and in-house guidelines/policies
- Easy to modify antimicrobial and indication lists, approval algorithms and information for treating common pathogens to suit other organisations
- Audit and feedback tool
